Hallelujahhhhhh!! Miss Mia Michaels will be back for season 7 of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance. Exciting, exciting news in a week where big announcements about the show have me a little crestfallen.

So along with Mia’s luscious, tasty, emotional gorgeous choreography, we get others returning to the SYTYCD floor. These are two of the dance “All Stars” that will be partnering with the season 7 top 10:

The All Star for Popping/Locking, Krumping, Breakdancing, etc. is tWitch Boss from Season 4!

The All Star for Jazz, Contemporary, Broadway and Cultural is Kathryn McCormick from Season 6!

Producer and Judge Nigel Lythgoe will continue tweeting these All-Stars announcements through the next week or so. In fact, he asked for suggestions from fans on who should return. If you want to put in your two cents, poke him through Twitter: http://twitter.com/dizzyfeet.

More later folks!

Head judge and executive producer of So You Think You Can Dance Nigel Lythgoe seemed to say over and over in season 6: “The chair is here for you Paula, come and join us!” Well, those weren’t his exact words, but you heard him talk about it enough through the entire season. And did Ms. Paula Abdul show up? No.

Well, that’s very unfortunate for her, because Nigel has officially withdrawn his invitation for her to come on SYTYCD. Pity. Seems her deal for a new Star Search just fell through (as reported by PopWrap).

At first I kinda chuckled about that, you know, “loopy Paula” and all. But then I went, wait. I would have really liked that. I mean, enough with her being a judge, why couldn’t she come on and choreograph? If you will remember back a few years ago, Paula Abdul was the go-to choreographer in Hollywood and the music industry. Yeah, remember “it’s Janet. Miss Jackson if you’re nasty?” I do.

I mean, look. Paula was discovered by THE JACKSONS for pete’s sake, at a Laker’s game. They saw her dancing with the Laker Girls and invited her to create the choreography for their “Torture” video, a process she’s not sure how she even got through. “My only problem was how to tell the Jacksons how to dance. Imagine me telling them what routines to do. I was young, I was scared.” But survive she did and went on to choreograph their Victory tour.

And tell me you didn’t know she choreographed this scene from the beloved american film Big:

I didn’t!!!! (thanks bunches Wikipedia)

Geez, I mean she even did those great African dance scenes in Coming to America (one of my favorite comedies), and she IS an Emmy Award-winning choreographer (for The Tracey Ullman Show and American Music Awards).

What really brought her to the forefront and ultimately, I think, led her to a music career is her close relationship with Janet Jackson during the Control era. And you have to remember that Janet was just coming up, too. Control really put her on the map and set her apart from the Jackson family. And damn if they weren’t hyper-danceable songs.

Ooooooo, I got chills just watching the open dance moves. Hot Hot HOT!! And it’s more jazz than hip-hop (didja SEE the guy do a zillion pirouettes??), something you just don’t see anymore in music videos. Little elements of West Side Story thrown in as well. Hurrah for 80′s stirrup leggings and big jackets with shoulder pads.

So loopy or not, she is a dance icon in America, and in my heart. Love ya, Paula–come back to the dance world!!

In a follow-up to my post about big changes on So You Think You Can Dance, producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe held his press conference via phone yesterday.

Here’s the big change:

The reason that there will not be a top 20, only a top 10 is that the top 10 contestants will be paired with dancers from past seasons of So You Think You Can Dance. WHOA! WHAT?

I am so conflicted on how to think about this. On one hand, I love the pairings, the camraderie, the melding of two personalities into one duo. And I also love seeing so many dancers and their individualities as they develop and bloom into even better dancers and artists. On the other hand, the show would no longer be So You Think You Can Dance. It would morph into So You Think You Can Dance With the Stars (stars being the past pro dancers who now have celebrity status).

I do love the past contestants, It would be really cool to see them again after they have been out “in the real world” for some time. What have they been doing? Have they increased their skills? Are they as personable as before (or limp dishrags)?

A change this big can only signal one thing in my mind: the show is having troubles with ratings. This will most certainly boost it. But for how long? I don’t know if I like the change, I will have to experience it in season 7. But I sincerely HOPE that it WORKS. I want to keep dance on national television, so that it can continue to influence us–give us that injection of aesthetics, art and creation that this world needs so desperately.

Nigel, you’re playing your hand–will So You Think You Can Dance win? I hope so.

Looks like there are changes in store for the next season of So You Think You Can Dance–I at least hope that it’s a change back to the OLD STAGE ;o)

Judge and Producer Nigel Lythgoe has been tweeeeeting away about “shocking changes” for his show, and they include a shift back to rotating judges (I always liked new blood on the panel each week), only one person eliminated per week, different partners for the dancers every week with the dance styles being chosen for them and the last is the kicker. NO TOP 20.

I don’t know about shocking, but they are certainly big changes. Like I said about the judges, I did like a new choreographer coming in every week (even if they were just from their pool of choreographers). It changed up the predictability of what might be said. The only one person being eliminated per week is most likely tied to the no top 20 item. Might they only choose a top 10? Hmmm, but that makes no sense–when they have odd numbers one person will have to dance with two people (intriguing, though).

I agree with the change that the dancers will no longer be “choosing” their dance styles out of a hat. Even though it will take the randomness of drawing traditional Russian dancing out (that was an odd one), it will give the dancers more likelyhood that they will be given a dance that they look great in. Hence, better ratings.

But…then…where will the real competition be? Nigel Lythgoe has given me much to ponder. I believe he’s holding a press conference today on the changes, so I will return with more news!

Choreographers who joined judges Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Adam Shankman for the audition process were lovely Sonja Tayeh and “Burn the Floor” choreographer Jason Gilkison.

Here’s a great article by Anthony Jones who spoke to Nigel during the auditions. Nice scoop!

**SPOILER ALERT**

The night opened with a sexy Top 18 (why not 20?) super hot group dance choreographed by Kelley Abbey and set to “Scared of Me” by Freddie le Grand. My husband even walked by and was distracted by the stockings and garters. “Ooh, those are hot.” Add a red chair to any dance and I’m a happy girl.

Next come the start of the judges favorite dance picks of the season:

Lil’ C’s dance choice is Kevin, Legacy and Russell dancing a NappyTabs Hip-Hop to “Beggin” by Madcon. Even better the second time around, Russell ruled it (of course) and I really love that song.

Adam Shankman: Ellenore and Jakob dancing a Sonya Tayeh Contemporary piece to “Tore My Heart” by OONA & Dave Tweedie. Great choice and I remember him practically orgasming over it last time. This is just a great piece. Love the post at the ending.

Nigel Lythgoe: Derick K. Grant tap number with Philip, Peter and Bianca dancing to “Take the A Train” by Ella Fitzgerald. I love that three, let alone one tapper was in the top 20. Tapping is just a really great form of dance that is not appreciated enough in today’s dance world of extreme acrobatics and hip-hop. However, it doesn’t seem to translate to television the way other dance forms do. So sad.

Mary Murphy breaks the “rules” this time around, and instead of picking the Contemporary piece that Ryan and Ashleigh danced last night, she got them to choreograph a Jive routine themselves. She’d waited all season long to see them dance together and was disappointed they didn’t draw a ballroom style. Their Jive is definitely good, but not nearly as compelling as their contemporary piece from the night before.

Next, guest dancers the Groovaloos perform a street hip hop number. This is a fun, great piece and the breakdancing moves are stylin’!

Continuing with Judges’ Choice, Nigel picks the Dwight/Desmond Contemporary piece with Kathryn and Jakob set to the fabulous song “At This Moment.” Brilliant.

Tyce DiOrio picks the Bollywood number that Nathan and Mollee did wayyyy back when. Ah, the two kids back together. I think that this and their Can Can routine were their best things as a couple.

Then, unfortunately, is about a minute of confusion as quite a few things happened: Cat’s mic went on the fritz and we couldn’t hear anything, then three finalists came on the stage, and Cat is given a hand mic which she starts asking “where’s everybody else, ” and “what’s happening here?” Then we see Russell limp on under Ryan’s help, unexplainedly in pain and tears. He’s hurt his leg. Cat deftly assures him that they will get him help. Then, with pretty much no ceremony Ryan is named 6th runner up. They cut to his video package which really shows him off. I always really liked him, for his dancing and especially for how much he loves his wife (awwww).

After the commercial, Adam Lambert comes on and we don’t get an update on Russell. Adam really smokes, and I talk with my husband about his really hip look, which he dubs “Rockabilly/Metal and Billie Holiday mixed with Freddie Mercury.” I love my husband, he’s so with it.

The five finalists come back on stage, Russell on a stool. The 5th place dancer is named: Ashleigh. Her video package is super hot and I for one am glad she overcame her illness to get back into dance.

Next Shankers picks the Ellenore/Legacy Travis Wall Contemporary. I didn’t care much for this the first time around, but seeing it again in a new unit of time endears it to me more. Very innovative, and as Adam said, had risk, danger, chemistry out the butt. He predicts an Emmy award for Mr. Wall.

Ms. Debbie Allen picks the African Jazz piece choreographed by Sean Cheesman for Noelle and Russell. Because Russell is injured, they go to the tape of the dance. Too bad for Noelle, she doesn’t get to do this again. I really loved this piece when I saw it the first time (the Frog Dance, it’s called), and the bit where they clamp onto each other, Noelle’s head down between his legs and flip end over end over end was amazing. Love it.

The four remaining finalists are on stage and they announce the 4th runner up: Ellenore. Her video package just reminds me how original she is, very unusual and quirky dancer. The dance world needs more of her.

After the break, Lil’ C makes his next choice, one the dancers had to “wring themselves dry” for, a Tyce DiOrio Contemporary way back from “Meet the Top 20″ and Nathan, Jakob, Channing and Ariana. This piece is good and each dancer shines in it. But with the four dancers shooting across the stage constantly and jumping up on each other all the time I found it a little hard to focus on.

Next Mary picks the red hot Hip Hop NappyTabs choreographed for Kathryn and Russell from the previous night. Smokin, I mean really. This, of course, is from tape as well.

We’re back from the commercial break, and Mary J. Blige takes the stage, looking absolutely classy. She performs “I Am.” This was really good, but why do they need clips of her videos in the background is more than I know. Hate that screen. H-a-t-e. Got it Fox? Good.

There’s time for one more judge’s pick, and Nigel goes back to “Meet The Top 20″ show and Wade Robson’s piece to the fantastically fierce “Comanche” by the Rebels. This is my absolute favorite group number of the entire season, it just combines so many elements that I adore. Thank gawd they played it again. 60′s style dance, dancers having sound while they dance (“shi-kah!”), girls in satin skirts slit up to their coochies, guys dancing tough as nails, hot and loud sax (yes, I said SAX), clapping, snapping, dance fighting, posing. Do I need any more??????

Ah, pause for a moment. While I watch the screen. OMG. Kathryn is just named 3rd runner up! I really don’t believe it. I really thought she was going to take it. Oh!! Wow, this is a complete surprise for me. After her video package she’s crying and her voice does NOT go up, good girl!! She’s beautiful, beautiful, beautiful and I wish the best things for her.

Ok, recover after that moment.

After the break, Jennifer Lopez reclines in a large silver stiletto on stage. Pretty neat. She calls–SANTA! Very cute. And I love her rhinestone tights. She looks fab and dances great and is probably lip-synching. Who can blame her with all the dancing?

Now it’s time to get down to business. Jakob and Russell come on stage. Well, Russell with Jakob’s help, that is. A few words about the show, dance and America winning as well as the winner of the show. We get to see a video package for both Russell and Jakob. They are really great to look back at, and we get to see Jakob do that amazing jete another 5 more times. Pure Poetry.

The boys look happy and anxious as we come back, and Cat starts her patter. The envelope snaps open. America’s Favorite dancer IS: Russell Ferguson! And BOY is he happy and grateful (and shirtless). He thanks everyone and says that he has dreamed of this since he was born (“I came out like–what!”).

Well he deserved it. And I picked the winner! Woo Hoo! Well, I know I said that Kathryn would probably get it, but I wished in my heart it was Russell. Yea for America, you voted well.

LONG LIVE DANCE!

Until season 7 of SYTYCD, I’ll be here continuing Dancemomma coverage of dance around the world. Goodnight.

W-O-W, what an evening last night on So You Think You Can Dance!

The Top 8 were set to perform, and right off the bat I was super confused. Wait, what’s going on? Something’s wrong. Then I saw it: Ashleigh did not do her beginning solo. What had happened? Host Cat Deely took a few moments before calling Ashleigh to the stage, and she walked on with her arm in a sling. Oh, injury. How really, really sucky. Apparently she completely dislocated her shoulder that very day doing a dress rehearsal, and was not being cleared by the doctors to dance. And boy, did she want to dance. But she kept it together, and after the next break she came back on stage to give her 888 number, asking for votes. This is really a sad predicament for her. Can her performances and hard work from the past weeks keep her in this competition? I put her in my “long haul” list, and I really hope so. It will be very interesting to see how the results unfold tonight.

On with the night, Ryan and Kathryn were up first with a Dori Disco routine. This is another great pairing, with a fun and difficult routine (and the Discos are usually ball busters). Kathryn looked SO gorgeous in her skimpy halter dress (which, interestingly enough was Dori’s doing, I didn’t realize that the choreographers had a huge hand in the costuming, interesting!). Ryan looked…well, disco-y. They did excellent work together and looked like they were having a ball, especially Ryan. He’s such a great partner-ing partner. Kathryn kicked butt and did super well in this new style for her.

Next was Molle and Jakob with my favorite Viennese Waltz–EVER. I’m serious, here, this is a wonder to behold. Fresh, young, full of breath and life. Thank you choreographer Jason Gilkison!!! And thank you to Mollee and Jakob for dancing a picture of young love in springtime, with very intricate steps, fast and energetic (not your usual Viennese Waltz, I’m telling you). They had a beautiful connection, and looked beautiful, Jakob in his white pants/vest/shirt and Mollee in her white blouse and ankle-length sunny yellow pleated skirt, complete with a bow in the back. Fantastic, on all sides, and even though this was only the second of 8 dances, I am not afraid to say my favorite of the night!

Another potential power couple was next: Ellenore and Legacy. They got Travis Wall and a Contemporary number that I was SO excited to see from the rehearsal footage I could taste it. Travis had a concept of two killers that are married and want to kill each other at the dinner table. Very “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” Unfortunately, for me this was a little to literal in the fight choreography and a bit one note. I saw a lot of hate and anger and not much lust/love, which it absolutely could have had (would have made for a better dynamic). They used a napkin for most of the dance and traded it back and forth during moves, which I thought was just distracting. And Ellenore’s dress was awful, just looked like two strips of fabric. OK! That said, they danced it extremely well, were very fearless with difficult moves and nearly impossible timing, and they did have a good connection.

Then came Russell and Ashleigh’s Shane Sparks Hip-Hop number. The rehearsal footage showed fantastic clips of Shane teaching Ashleigh how to shake her booty. Super funny! Looking back ( I watched it a couple times), this was probably the BEST Hip-Hop dance of the entire season, very “old school” as judge Nigel Lythgoe said. Russell just exploded off the stage with energy, enthusiasm and smiles. He shines like a star and does excellently. Unfortunately, his partner was so distracting because she was not nearly the caliber of dancer that Russell is (or Ashleigh for that matter). And I thought that was odd, considering she’s Shane’s assistant. Oh well.

Mollee’s solo is the only solo I’m going to mention in this post. And why? Because SHE ARRIVED. To the show, to her womanhood, to the party. I saw this girl for the first time this season with her solo to Alicia Keys’ “Heartburn”, which she also sang along to during her dance. Now, I will say that she had improved last week with Russell and was stunning in her Waltz with Jakob earlier in the night. But this is a dancer who made an entrance here, and I was riveted. She flirted, had fun, flipped and twirled and had me wrapped around her finger. Yeah, this is what dance is all about! Well done to her.

Whew. I get no downtime as Kathryn and Ryan are next with a Jason Gilkison Cha Cha Cha. I learn that Jason is responsible for Burn the Floor, currently on Broadway (where have I been?), no wonder he’s standing out for me. And know how I said his Viennese Waltz was the best I’ve ever seen? This Cha Cha Cha is the BEST Cha Cha Cha I’ve ever seen (enough Cha’s for ya?). Jason rocks the Casbah, baby, I’m in love. I was glued to the screen during this dance, it amazed me. Kathryn and Ryan had a hot chemistry and connection, flirt-y sultriness. Ryan looked so hot in his hat and suspenders, and Kathryn was SO sexy in her fishnets and feathers–great use of feathers, by the way, long straight ones as a skirt instead of the fluffy emu-type. Ryan and Kathryn attacked the choreography with great relish, which was syncopated so well with Joss Stone’s song “Put Your Hands On Me”, great choice. Can I have a cigarette, please? They climb on judge Mary Murphy’s Hot Tamale Train, which she has only done one or two times this season.

Mollee and Jakob once again wipe up the dance floor with a Joey Bowling Broadway number to “Easy Street” from Annie (excellent music choices for this show, that is one of my faves). They are lovely and amazing and cute and mischievous. Did I mention they danced amazingly? This style also suited them well, and Nigel encouraged Mollee to get over to Broadway, they were waiting for her. This looked easy and joyous for them. Brilliant.

Ellenore and Legacy were up once again with a Nappy Tabs Hip Hop dance about aliens. This was good fun, but not fantastic, like I was hoping. The choreography didn’t really push them to their limits of what they could do, although it started off well, with the backwards masks. Shame on Tabetha and Napoleon for not really challenging these two.

After Ryan’s solo, he interrupts Cat while she’s giving his number to give Ashleigh’s number. This is a man who loves his woman. I was touched. What a mensch.

Last is Russell (and Ashleigh’s) Bollywood. And Bollywood it was, with a bit of funk and soul injected from Russell. You could just see it in his movement. Bollywood is so relentless in it’s movements and hand/head/finger/foot positioning (we learn that a wrong hand position can offend in India), and Russell was right there the entire time, never looking tired, and always having that sparkling smile ready. The execution was superb, and judge Adam Shankman said that he radiated pure joy for the art of dance. I whole-heartedly agree. Bonus that Russell’s partner was up-to-speed with him, and when I saw the move that dislocated Ashleigh’s shoulder (leap and swing over the head and around to in front of his legs), my shoulder hurt a little, too.

Needless to say, I am very torn about the finale. They all deserve to be there, including Ashleigh. I want everyone to win. But then, it wouldn’t be a competition, would it? Well, I voted for everyone and put a few extra votes in for my favorites. Who will be in the finale for season 6? Tune in tonight and find out!

Whew! Well, after the fallout from Nigel Lythgoe’s tirade last week, the mood on the set of So You Think You Can Dance this week was decidedly subdued. Criticism was given quite a bit milder, and enthusiasm was not as big (geeze, Mary only yelled once the entire show). This was not to say that the dancing did not merit enthusiasm, however. This was a darn good night, with my favorite dance of the season so far.

Ashleigh and Jakob opened the night with a NappyTabs Hip-Hop number. The story was of a girl and her cheatin’ guy–and she finds out by looking at a text on his phone (how very of the times). I love that NappyTabs tells stories with their choreography. Before SYTYCD, I had never experienced Hip-Hop this way, and it was quite a revelation for me. Ashleigh and Jakob really came out fighting in this piece, they took hold of the story and told it with the movements, creating their relationship. They absolutely had the passion and the hurt, but I felt needed just a tad more love. After all, there’s no hurt if there was no love, right? Nigel predicted Jakob to go to the top 10, and told Ashleigh she has grown super-fast as a dancer on the show. Kudos all around.

Next were Karen and Kevin with a Spencer Liff Broadway ditty from Sweet Charity. This was an interesting combination of super-cuteness and super-hard choreography. Broadway is never an easy task, and doesn’t usually garner high praise from the judges. Karen and Kevin were cute together (a 180 from sizzling hotness the past few weeks), but the level of cuteness and humor needed to be far above what they gave on stage for the whole thing to work. Lots more *wink* would have worked for them.

Interestingly enough, Noelle and Russell drew Foxtrot once again out of the hat, with Eddie Simon choreographing. Wow, did Russell improve vastly from his Foxtrot a few weeks ago. But seriously, can Russell do no wrong? The two of them looked like they were having just the time of their lives up on stage, you could almost feel the joy through the tv. Their movements were smooth and effortless and were great to watch. Sheer elegance.

Channing and Victor got a Tyce DiOrio Jazz number where they got to portray “two curious, eclectic, blackbirds coming out to play,” as Tyce said. They used the Beatles’ “Blackbird” covered by Bobby McFerrin, which lent itself very well to the stacatto movements. They had good connection and synchronization and really popped in this dance. I could have even taken even more bird-like mannerisms. After all, if you’re going to portray an animal, you might as well go all the way, huh? Channing and Victor definitely seemed to enjoy them selves in this, there was a certain freedom that I’d never seen before in their dancing.

Kathryn and Legacy drew the “Paso Doble from Hell” (choreographer Tony Meredith’s words). This one was a lot of fun to watch. The Paso can very easily look silly and overdone, and this was not the case with Kathryn and Legacy. They committed to the story of the sea Admiral coming back to claim his angry, heartbroken woman. Whew! Much anger, passion, heat and fire. There could have been a little more precision, and Legacy’s shoulders were pretty tense (as were Kevin’s, it’s common with guy dancers), but overall it was really terrific.

Ellenore and Ryan performed my favorite dance of the night, and of the season so far, a Travis Wall Contemporary number. This told the story of a broken up couple who happens to bump into each other one day. She nursed a broken heart for along time and got over him, he suddenly realized he missed the boat with her. The moment they bumped into each other was truly exquisite, they really took their time and SAW each other, and reacted, it was a real moment. From there the connection strengthened and their performance was superb. Their movements were completely in tune with each other, and you felt their dilemma with the “I really love you but I can’t do this again” thing. They had a fearlessness when they danced with each other, and the lifts and leaps just seemed to happen with no effort. The dance closed brilliantly, bringing them back to the first moment where they bumped into each other, portraying the whole experience happening in a moment in their heads, and they went their separate ways. Genius.

Mollee and Nathan closed out the show with a LaurieAnn Gibson Pop Jazz routine. Loriann had them use an interesting technique of doing a lot of yelling while they danced, because sound unlocks the spirit. I liked this odd technique, sound is always good, and it also gets you to BREATHE, which dancers often forget to do (yeah, right?). Unfortunately, Mollee’s dress was truly awful and took me completely out of it to begin with, and then I just didn’t GET this dance at all. What was I missing? There was even one move where they looked like they were in a sexual position. But, they were big, coordinated, strong, and committed to the dance. Kudos. Not much connection with each other, however, and I really think that comes with just being too young and inexperienced in relationships. They are babies, after all. Talented babies.

Well! We wait with baited breath for elimination tonight. Will Kevin and Karen get sent home as Nigel predicts? Tune in and see!

Excitement is in the air as it’s now in America’s hands to vote for their favorite dancers on So You Think You Can Dance. So make sure you DO VOTE, or lament as your favorite dancer is sent home.

I love a good Disco routine, and opening the show with Karen and Kevin doing a Hustle to “Come To Me” was just what was needed to kick things off right. Karen and Kevin are finally really gelling as a couple, and it showed in this dance. They had great connection, and Karen (once again, miss hottie) really sparkled, but in the same way that she has the past few weeks, completely overshadowing Kevin. And as I watched Kevin, I thought “wow, this guy does not have lines like a hip-hopper.” His arms were fabulous, his jete popped magnificently, and his double pirouette was excellent. Once or twice there was a shadow of awkwardness, but they were very synchronized as a couple.

My pick as favorite dance of the night was Ashleigh and Jakob, doing a Mandy Moore Jazz routine to Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s ”Relax.” The addition of a cane to the mix did nothing to diminish their dancing, nor distract. Where Noelle and Russell got sidelined a little by their rackets last week, Ashleigh and Jakob integrated their cane directly into their dance, so it became an extension of their movement. There was real relish in their dancing and I thoroughly enjoyed backing up to watch this again. Mandy put together a great piece with super hip movements–and managed to include another Jakob famous leap that blended in well.

Next was Pauline and Peter with the unlukiest draw from the hat, the Quickstep. Fortunately, JT and Thomas created a fantastic routine for them, incorporating great characters and story: an Army GI falls for an island hula girl. This is a great departure from the traditional ballgown/tails, no story Quickstep. Joy, personality and boisterousness erupted from Pauline and Peter as they danced, even if precise technique didn’t. I only spotted one big misstep, and overall they were really fun to watch.

Newcomer choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler created an adorable Broadway number for Kathryn and Legacy. As is the norm for Broadway, big characters and story were at the forefront for Kathryn and Legacy to sink their teeth into. It was a simple tale of the sports loving boyfriend and the put-upon girlfriend. This piece was just so frickin’ cute, I really loved it. They worked great as a couple but Legacy really outdid himself, bending his B-Boy moves seamlessly into the Broadway standard, amazing me with a backwards flip/headstand into an easy chair. This guy is growing in leaps and bounds as a dancer. Judge Adam Shankman wanted more anger from Kathryn, and I found myself agreeing with him, as it would have added a deeper dynamic to the couples relationship that would have cooled the cuteness slightly and made for an even better routine.

New couple Channing and Victor seemed to have gotten the luck of the draw, as they are both Contemporary dancers, pickedConteporary out of the hat, and had Stacey Tookey crafting for them. I really liked this routine that portrayed a toxic relationship and was set to Rachel Yamagata’s “Be Be Your Love” (amazing song). Channing and Victor danced with explosive, emotional movements that were stunning and told the story of two lovers who should save themselves the heartache and call it quits. I saw great connection in their very first dance together with lots of dynamics and sensitivity in their movement. Their emotional roller coaster definitely got to me. Judge Nigel Lythogoe, however, raked them over the coals for not being absolutely brilliant. I can see his point, as they’re both in their element and were able to super-humanly excel. He simply felt they didn’t take it to the next level, and sure told them so. Ouch.

With another big stretch, Ryan and Ellenore took on a Lil’ C Hip-Hop routine where they attempted to find their “swagger.” Swagger they definitely got, and they did pretty good. This was a huge change for Ryan who expanded himself greatly here. Unfortunately this piece just wasn’t a favorite of mine, the choreography fell slightly flat for me, and it lacked excitement. Oh well.

Next we went from flat to disasterous, with Mollee and Nathan’s Salsa. Gustavo Vargas gave them a super cool routine to do, but this was just so far out of both of their scopes that they really struggled with it (and looked like it, too). They were not in synch with each other on many moves, looked awkward on the lifts, and there were several moments where I had to back up the DVR, saying “what just happened there?” This was super tough, and I give kudos to the kids for attacking it with what they had. Mollee rolled those hips fantastically and looked very sexy in her dress.

The evening ended with a bang when Noelle and Russell performed their Sean Cheeseman Afro-Jazz routine. I adore African dance movement, and Noelle and Russell did not dissappoint, throwing their bodies around in the frenetic movement. Sean gave them characters of a princess and a frog, and their story came through as they attacked it and gave their all. I will make no bones about it, Russell is my personal favorite on the show, and I was so happy to see him in something that he could easily excell in (Afro-Jazz is not totally 180 from Krumping). Noelle, as well was able to shine with this movement as her Contemporary style lends itself well to Afro-Jazz. And yes, Russell is still on the Hot Tamale Train. Woo Hoo!

That’s it for this week, please please PLEASE vote for your favorites, or they may not be there next week!
