Looking back at So You Think You Can Dance

December 3rd, 2009 by soullldiva

I’m assigning myself a project and I’m very excited.  I am actually a “latecomer” to the SYTYCD fan family, I joined a few seasons ago. But seeing as there are six seasons, I decided to look back on all the seasons and find the very best dances.  This will, of course, be of my opinion. That’s why first I’m going to ask YOUR opinion–what are your favorites? Who should I look back at and who should I check out? Let me know and I’ll find it on YouTube. Let’s have some FUN! Stay tuned for my first post on this, coming soon…

Oh my goodness. How do you ever decide which are the best? When I read this posting, I decided to go back and look at some of my recordings of some the shows (I take these things very seriously, you know). I have very poorly recorded VHS tapes of seasons 2 and 3 (I only had peasant vision and a VCR). I know it’s pathetic but I can’t bring myself to get rid of them. I think you may have trouble finding these dances on youtube. I tried looking them up and I can’t find some of them. I believe there may be problems with copyrights. Especially the Wade Robson routines.

The best I think from season 2 was the top four dance from Wade to Sexy Back. It was priceless. Also, a fav is the top six dancing to Hide and Seek (by Mia). Really good routines that you should check out for your list (if you can find them) are: Allison and Ivan in Sexy Love (Shane Sparks), Dmytri and Ashlee in Dance Dance (can’t remember choreographer….Brian Friedman?), Allison and Ivan in Why (by Tyce), Natalie and Benji in Wonderful (by Tyce?), Dmytri and Donyelle in Hey Mama (by Mary Murphy), and Jaymz and Jessica in Let Go (by Brian Friedman). Of course, there’s always the Bench routine which was amazing but I was assuming that you were looking for different ones.

For season 3, in reviewing the tapes, I can’t help but feel that season 3 was the best for consistent choreo. I mean, in the FIRST episode it had soooo many amazing routines that you didn’t know which couple to cheer for. The choreo really high-lighted the talents of so many. I’m going to continue in another post because I don’t know if there’s a limit to how much I can say in one post.

Okay, in the first episode of season 3, Danny and Anya danced a Jive to Girlfriend, Pasha and Jessi danced a waltz to Come Away with Me, Lacy and Kameron did this amazing contemporary of Mia’s to Dancing, Jamie and Hok did a Hip Hop to Tambourine (can’t remember choreographer), and the absolute high-light was Sara and Jesus doing the Vagabond Cabaret from Wade (wow).

That season really had amazing choreo all the way through it. Wade did a lot that year. That was the year of the Hummingbird routine and Lauren and Neil did Wade’s Angel/Devil routine (I just love that one). Sara and Pasha did the West Coast Swing that Benji choreographed, Hok and Jamie did a waltz to Angel (can’t remember choreographer), Danny and Lacey did the samba to Hip, Hip (by Dmytri), Pasha and Lauren did the transformer routine by Shane, Danny and Anya did Too Late to Apologize by Tyce, Pasha and Sara did Body Language by Mandy Moore and Neil and Lauren did Let the Drummer Kick (I think by Mia).

But the high-light again for me was the top eight and top six routines. The top 8 was a routine by Shane with a Matrix-like theme. And the top 6 was priceless!!! It was a routine by Wade to a Tom Wait song called 2:19. I don’t know how to describe it….twisted, perhaps.

I’m actually skipping over a bunch of routines that were really good too. Looking back, I think season 3 was one of the best. Maybe not so much because of the talent of the dancers but because of the talent and consistency of the choreo.

Bet you wish you never asked for my opinion, huh?

oh, and I forgot, in season 2, you have to check out Heidi and Benji dancing Black Mambo if you haven’t already. Also, Heidi and Travis dancing W’happy Mama (by Wade). Then of course, there’s always Wade Ramalama (probably spelling it wrong). And Benji and Donyelle waltzing to Have you ever really loved a woman?

Did I mention that I could go on and on?

LOL!!! You are so adorable. I absolutely want you to go on and on, because I need ways to search these! Thank you SO much for all your suggestions, I will look at all of them and just go one season at a time. This is going to be SO fun! Next got to decide how I want to categorize them: dances, choreographers, groups or just the best? Hmmmm… Thanks again for your fantastic comments, dixly!!
