Jousts, Heralds and David Bowie in “A Knight’s Tale”

February 15th, 2010 by soullldiva

Saturday afternoon I was flipping through our HBO channels and A Knight’s Tale was on. I loved this movie so much when it came out that I bought the DVD and have watched it a gazillion times.

Besides Heath Ledger, who I adore and miss heartily, I really really loved the way they melded the old world and contemporary style, period and hip. After all Knights were the Rock Stars of Midieval times, right? Not only does Sir Ulrich’s (Ledger) posse look like a modern-day entourage with a twist, but Lady Jocelyn’s dresses are chaste and sexy all at the same time.

Take this scene for instance, at the tournament feast. Usually traditional dancing was lots of stepping and clapping, and it lends itself very well to melding into a bunch of young people dancing at a party. All to David Bowie’s “Golden Years”. New and classic, all at the same time. Cheers!

Kelly Osbourne proof that dancing WORKS as fitness

February 12th, 2010 by soullldiva

Have you seen her?  I mean…puh-leeze!!

Kelly Osbourne body hard work and courtesy of DWTS

First of all, she’s HALF of what she used to be (as we used to say, she’s lost a whole Backstreet Boy). Her eyes just jump out of her face. I always thought her face was sweet looking, and she’s always going to have that wide jaw (inherited from her mom), but the whole package just makes for a really interesting, cute girl. I don’t even mind the tattoos. It’s gives an edge to her very young look.

Love the dress, too, darling.

BUT–

Kelly Osbourne with the new DWTS bod

OMG and I mean it. Not tacky, though. I think this look is hawt.

Great work, Kelly, on DWTS AND on the body. Looks like you worked hard and you deserve it!

Will Nancy O’Dell Take Over Hosting on Dancing With the Stars?

February 12th, 2010 by soullldiva

Even though Nancy O’Dell was forced to step out of the 8the season of Dancing With the Stars (due to serious knee injury), it looks like she may beNancy O'Dell taking over for Samantha on DWTS? back! But not as a contestant. E! News reported recently that she is being considered to replace Samantha Harris, who resigned her co-hosting position a couple of weeks ago.

I think this would be a good addition to the DWTS team, I think she and Tom Bergeron would look good together and I absolutely think she’s a better interviewer than Samantha.

There’s no confirmation from ABC yet, so we wait and see!

Looking Back on So You Think You Can Dance Part 6

February 12th, 2010 by soullldiva

It’s kinda a bummer that a bunch of So You Think You Can Dance videos got taken down. I realize that Fox owns the show, so they get to do what they wish with them. Oh well.

This one from my favorites list is still standing, however, so I get to write about it. I swear, Cat Deely and the Judges couldn’t say “cheeky” enough while talking about this dance. From season 5, Evan and Randi performing a Mia Michaels contemporary to “Koop Island Blues”.

This is a decidedly lighter side of Mia, and I love that as much as her darker side. I’ve always adored mismatched couples, and that’s exactly what you see the first moment in the dance, especially with Randi wearing those stilletto platforms (those come off eventually) and towering a half a foot over Evan. You can just see this slightly dorky guy who can’t believe his luck to get this curvy, sexy bubbly girl on his arm. And of course, the focus of his admiration happens to be her behind.

Mia uses clever and cute choreography to illustrate this admiration and tongue-in-cheek”iness” abounds.

Don Cornelius and Line Dances on Soul Train

February 11th, 2010 by soullldiva

MOMO, a writer colleague of mine on the So You Think You Can Dance Social found this gem and I couldn’t help but pass it on.

Soul Train used to be some strange show to me that used to come on after all the cartoons were over on Saturday morning/early afternoon. Strange and…intriguing…as the intro started with that psychedelic cartoon of a train running on the tracks (and turning into the “Soul Train” logo), and the voice calling out “It’s the Sooooooooooul Train!”

I would watch young people in outrageous clothing shake their hips and wave their arms. It was odd to me and not odd. I can’t explain it. All I know is that years later I would learn to sing by attempting to imitate Aretha Franklin (not truly succeeding but not unsuccessful either, as I am from Kansas and severely Caucasian), I would be fronting my own 8 piece soul/R&B/Blues band and singing the very song in this video (Aretha Franklin’s “Rock Steady” is one of the best soul songs out there). Oh, and also shaking my hips (pretty nicely, I might add). If I ever scan in the pictures and convert the VHS tape to DVD I’ll show it to you sometime. Me, in leopard skin pants!

Soul Train is a jewel of American culture, created in 1965 on a UHF channel in Chicago, and Don Cornelius (and his fab hexagon spectacles) pretty much invented the line dance–and I don’t mean country dancing. I mean everyone lines up in two lines facing each other, then take turns in twos going down the row and struttin’ your stuff. Plus they had amazing soul acts on the show: The O Jays, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Tower of Power and Gladys Knight and the Pips.

Anyway, enough nostalgic-ness, enjoy the video!
